The grapes from this selection were grown by Elkhorn Peak who specializes in growing and producing estate grown, limited production of Pinot Noir. The grapes are grown in Jamieson Canyon which is located at the extreme Southern end of the Napa Valley. Views of the Golden Gate Bridge are seen from the vineyards. This hillside vineyard was established in 1983 and is still family owned and operated. The main focus of this vineyard is on Pinot Noir. There are a few things about this wine which make it very distinctive. The grapes were grown in one of the coolest areas of Napa just East of the Carneros region. This is significant since it is not grown in the delimited appellation of Carneros, but has the same cool climate. This region doesn't have Carneros' overly rich soil which is a seen as a benefit. Before grapes were planted in Carneros, it was home to asparagus and artichokes which is relevant because wine grapes grow in notoriously rocky soil which is not domestic to most other crops. The region these grapes originate from host the best climate and soil. The grapes were harvested from two of Elkhorn's 10-acre vineyards, Vineyard 38 and Fagan Creek. The aging regimen included: 22 months in French oak, 1/3 new, 1/3 one-year-old, placed in 2-year-old barrels. There were only 175 cases produced of this blend. The other wines made from this vineyard sell for almost $40.00 a bottle Most of the other parts of Napa are way too hot to grow Pinot Noir which is why it is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon. So, naturally, we were skeptical when we saw the Napa appellation on a Pinot Noir. Needless to say, we were flabbergasted. The purity of the enticing and alluring Pinot Noir fruit envelops the glass and every sense available. You literally cannot wait for the next sip. Incredible with roast duck or rack of lamb dusted with garlic and rosemary.
